In a unanimous and uncontested election held on Tuesday, Surendra Govekar was elected as the new sarpanch of the coastal Anjuna-Caisua panchayat, which has recently been in the spotlight over a series of environment-related concerns.
The election followed the resignation of the previous sarpanch, Laxmidas Chimulkar, who stepped down around two weeks prior after a tenure of nearly three years at the helm.
According to panchayat insiders, the decision to elect Govekar was part of a verbal understanding among panchayat members.
Upon his election, Govekar declared that his immediate priorities will include improving basic infrastructure, strengthening cleanliness drives and instituting a more transparent and efficient administration for the welfare of Anjuna and Caisua residents.
The Anjuna-Caisua panchayat has recently been active on governance issues “ for example, the panchayat issued a stop-work order recently against an alleged illegal anti-sea-wall construction under section 64(1) of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994.
The move illustrates the panchayat’s intention to act on regulatory oversight in its coastal jurisdiction.
With the change at the top, local watchers will be keenly watching whether Govekar’s stated goals translate into tangible action “ especially in a village of both tourist importance and residential constituency where infrastructure and environmental concerns often intersect.
Govekar steps into the role at a moment when the panchayat faces multiple fronts: from maintaining public services amid seasonal tourism pressures, to local development and environmental safeguards.
He has earlier been involved in activism when as a resident of the village he lodged complaints regarding alleged illegal constructions in the CRZ area.
The local residents recently raised concerns about issues such as road-widening, hotel/night-club operations and illegal dumping.
