He also advised the Mamlatdar not to allow anybody to interfere with the sluice gate till the auction is conducted and the charge of Charmanas is handed over to the new committee.
Khaunte visited the Charmanas at Salai along with Bardez Mamlatdar Dashrath Gawas, executive engineer of Soil Conservation Ashok Komtar, junior engineer of Water Resource Department Milind Gawade and Salai Khazan Tenants Association president Marina Moraes and discussed the issue of Charmanas with the farmers.
Later speaking to media persons, Khaunte said the sluice gates of the Charmanas at Salai have broken, due to which saline water is entering the agricultural fields and damaging the crops, causing losses to the farmers. He had called
for the inspection of the sluice gate.
After discussing the issue with the farmers, it was revealed that auction of the Charmanas did not take place for the last 3 years and the problem had occurred since there is no responsible authority to look after the maintenance of the sluice gate.
Later, Khaunte advised the Mamlatdar to conduct the auction of the sluice gate immediately and set things in order.
Farmers, Narendra Chatim and Ragunath Madkaikar told The Goan that they have submitted the membership of Salai committee to the Mamlatdar, as no auction was conducted of the Charmanas.
The farmers said the Bardez Mamlatdar had agreed to conduct the auction of the Charmanas in January, but had failed to do so. Since saline water has entered their fields, they are unable to cultivate the land, due to which they are suffering losses.
