A large number of people opposed to the IIT project blocked the road at Shel-Melauli on Friday and threatened not to allow officials to continue with land survey work for the project.

The officials had begun land survey work on Wednesday under police protection, prompting the agitators to stage a dharna outside the Sattari deputy collector’s office on Thursday and submit a memorandum to the deputy collector, expressing their objection to the land survey work.

Insisting that biodiversity in the area would be destroyed by the IIT project being set up at Guleli, the agitators have complained that despite several petitions to the government, their grievances have not been considered.

Anticipating officials to continue with the land survey work on Friday, a large number of people blocked the street and threatened to cut off access to the land survey team.

However, the agitation was called off in the afternoon after the officials did not visit the area for the land survey work.

The protestors have warned that they will not allow any further land survey work at the site.

“The State government has not taken any action regarding our problems in this area,” complained a resident, Unnati Melekar.

Meanwhile, sources said officials are likely to visit the area on Monday to continue with the land survey work.
