But a visit to the Salcete Sub Registrar office housed in the District Collectorate will tell you that citizens can hope to lay their hands on birth records only after a month. Thousands of applications for birth certificates have been pending for months altogether now. A backlog of thousands of applications received by the office since January last are pending for want sufficient staff to dispose of the applications. The immediate fallout of the situation is that applicants are called to the Sub Registrar’s office to collect the birth certificates after around a month.
“With a handful of employees, we are helpless in clearing the backlog. Unless additional staff is deputed at the Salcete Sub Registrar office, it would be difficult to clear the backlog in the near future,” remarked an employee. Sources in the know say that the problem will certainly persist for a couple of months for the simple reason that the Salcete Sub Registrar office receives around 100 applications on an average for birth and death records.
“When thousands of applications are already pending in the office since January last, it would be impossible to clear the backlog immediately,” remarked another employee.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had dispatched two additional employees to the Salcete Sub Registrar office to beef up the manpower shortage at the request of Salcete’s lone minister, Vijai Sardesai. Though the Chief Minister’s move may help tide over the staff problem, the ground reality in the disposal of the applications for births and deaths remains unchanged.
When The Goan contacted Salcete Sub Registrar Chandrakant Pissurlekar to shed light on the pendency and backlog of applications, he said the office staff is trying its level best to clear the backlog on top most priority.
