Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar has said that a proposal has been submitted to set up an aquarium at Keri village in Sattari taluka under the Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
Around 8,000 square metres of land has been acquired from the Water Resources Department for the project. The proposed aquarium will display different species of fish and is expected to attract visitors to the area.
Halarnkar said the project report will be sent to the Central and State governments for approval. The project is planned under a partnership model, with 60 per cent funding from the Centre and 40 per cent from the State government.
The aquarium was earlier proposed at Miramar, but the plan has now been shifted to Keri. Sources said the project has not yet received final approval.
There is also a proposal to set up a fisheries-related museum and an information centre at the same location.
Sources said the Goa“Belagavi road via Chorla passes through Keri village, which sees visitors during the monsoon due to nearby waterfalls.
Beautification work of the Ajoba Temple is currently underway, with funds running into crores of rupees.
A source said that setting up an aquarium in the area could help increase tourist visits to the region.
