Have the Covid cases recorded at the Margao Urban Health on the decline? Or, are the statistics in the Health bulletin not corroborating with the ground situation in the commercial capital?
If one goes by the government health bulletin, Covid cases have showed a decline after a massive spike in the cases. The serpentine queue of COVID positive patients or their relatives at the Margao Urban Health centre, however, tells a contrasting tale with over 100 patients or their relatives making a beeline for home isolation kits or medicines.
A look at the Covid statistics in daily health bulletin shows that cases came down to 2,253 on Thursday as against total cases of 2,275 recorded at the Margao Urban Health Centre on Wednesday. The statistics does give a picture that the total cases in the Margao UHC have come down by 22 if one compares the cases on record in the Urban Health Centre in the last two days.
After the huge spike of 304 cases on May 3 there seems to be a sudden stagnation in cases in the last three days or decline as per the health bulletin.
Take the cases in the last five days; if the bulletin said 2,150 cases on May 2, Covid infections made a huge jump to 2,454 on May 3, a spike of 304 cases.
A look at the statistics from May 4, however, reveals that the cases have stagnated, giving an impression that the situation has begun to stabilize. Otherwise, consider this -- if around 2,454 cases were detected on May 3, the number of cases shown on May 4 were put at 2,262, a decline of around 192 in active cases. Since then the statistics have showed that cases are either on the decline or have only increased marginally.
Health officials in the know in private, however, said that the statistics do not speak of the ground reality. “We have also been taken aback by the statistics, more so when we find over 100 patients or their relatives standing in the queue for home isolation kits or medicine. In addition to the positive cases we receive from the South district hospital, even cases detected at the city-based private hosptials are reported at the health centre”, health sources informed.

out of home isolation kits
MARGAO: For the last two days the Margao Urban Health Centre has run out of home isolation kits, leaving relatives of Covid positive patients to be content with only medicines.
Urban Health officials have expressed helplessness in managing the situation, admitting that the health centre has not received any stock of home isolation kits for the last two days. Left with no option, the relatives of the patients have had to return home only with medicines.
An official pointed out that people come to collect home isolation kits with the hope of getting an oximeter. “People return home disappointed for want of the kits and because of the fact that oximeters have run out of stock at most pharmacies and medical stores”, the official added.
The Health centre has no idea whether the it will receive the kits in the future, with an official promising to make enquiries with the Director of Health Services.
