A gang of masked men armed with choppers and knives attacked Aldona Sarpanch Pranesh Naik in a bar and restaurant in Carona, Aldona on Thursday evening.
Naik has suffered serious injuries on his legs and is undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.
Vijay Karbotkar, a resident of Britona has been identified as a suspect involved in the attack even as Mapusa Police has launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
According to police, seven persons trespassed into the bar and attacked Naik while he was sitting inside along with his friends.
Sources informed that six to seven people wearing masks came in a vehicle and called Pranesh Naik out of the bar and restaurant.
An unsuspecting Naik came out and was immediately attacked with sharp weapons by the accused.
On noticing that Naik was being attacked, his friends and the attendants of the bar and restaurant raised an alarm.
In the commotion, the accused took to their heels and ran away from the site.
Police have registered a case against the accused under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 143 (unlawful assembly), 144 (armed with weapons), 147 (Rioting), 148 and 452 (trespass) of the IPC.
Sources informed that the sarpanch is involved in several business activities and previous enmity could be one of the reasons for the attack.
Mapusa Police is investigating further.
