Hazard a guess on the State of financial position of the Margao Municipal Council as on Thursday?
Shocking it may sound, the MMC had cash in its account close to Rs 20 lakh on Thursday. If the MMC decides to spend Rs 15 lakh out of this amount to clear the Diwali bonus on Monday or Thursday, the civic body would be left with mere Rs 5 lakh in its coffers.
This may throw a bigger question how and from where would the civic body arrange close to Rs 2 crore to foot the salary and wage bill of the Municipal employees and the workers for the month of November in the next 10 days.
With the Municipal workers insisting on the payment of the Diwali bonus immediately when the administration was prioritising the payment of salaries, the million dollar question that remains unanswered is how would the MMC mop up revenue close to Rs 2 crore to disburse the salaries and wages for the employees and workers.
Senior MMC officers had no clue to the question and neither were the officials manning the taxation section, which is responsible for the recovery of the outstanding tax revenue.
