MAPUSA
Ajay Gupta, co-owner of Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub at Arpora, has been remanded to a 7-day police custody by a Mapusa court, following his arrest from Delhi in connection with the fire tragedy which claimed 25 lives.
On Thursday, Anjuna police produced Gupta before the Mapusa Judicial Magistrate First Class and sought his remand in connection with ongoing police investigations.
Adv Rohan Desai argued that his client, Ajay Gupta, is fully cooperating with the investigating agencies. He stated that Gupta has a spinal problem and requested the court not to send him to custody on medical grounds.
However, the police opposed this request and submitted a medical certificate from doctors in Delhi to the court stating that Gupta had undergone a medical examination there and was medically fit for police custody. The court rejected the lawyer's request, instructing Anjuna police to provide Gupta with all medicines prescribed by doctors.
While leaving the court, Gupta told media persons that he is a silent partner in the business and has no connection with the fire tragedy at the nightclub.
