As the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has resumed carting out the piled up waste from the Sonsodo waste treatment plant, questions are raised whether the GWMC or the Margao Municipal Council has any action plan in place how to go about treating the daily garbage dumped into the plant.
That the Sonsodo waste treatment plant was just being used as a garbage dump instead of a waste treatment site has now become evident with the shed now playing host to leachate and sludge.
Even as the Margao Municipal Chief Officer Rohit Kadam has come out with fresh ideas how to treat the daily generation of dry plastic, without any financial implications for the civic body, it is feared in the corridors of the civic body that failure to put a plan in place to treat the daily generation of wet waste dumped inside the waste treatment plant will only leave the waste pile up again.
It is not out of place to mention here that this is the second time in the last two years that the GWMC contractor is carting away the piled up waste from the Sonsodo plant. While the 2020 exercise had cost the civic body a whopping Rs 85 lakh, the GWMC has now shouldered the responsibility to bear the cost to cart out and remediate the piled up waste.
Sources pointed out that the GWMC ongoing operation of carting out the piled waste has bailed out the civic body for the moment, as it has helped to make space for the MMC to dump the daily wet waste into the shed, which otherwise would have found its way outside the shed for want of place inside.
Waste Management Minister Atanasio Monserrate’s promised bio-digesters at Sonsodo on the lines of Saligao plant are expected to come up at Sonsodo within a year and half. The moot question, however, remains unanswered “ how will the Margao Municipality or the GWMC go about handling the daily wet waste which is transported to the Sonsodo plant from the city?
