The two murder cases reported in Salcete and an attempt to end life by a native of Jharkhand over the last two days, have brought to the fore again the contentious issue of tenant verification.

The incidents have thrown up a question or two for the Goa police to answer – is the tenant verification exercise implemented by the men-in-uniform in both letter and spirit? Have the police booked any landlord or tenants for violating orders issued under Section 144 of CrPC by the South Goa district Magistrate, and how many of these cases have ended up in conviction of offenders.

These and many other questions may come back to haunt the police with sources in the know saying the tenant verification exercise has failed to keep pace with the changing times, more so with the rampant influx of migrants into the State.

When the Sub-divisional police officer, DySP Santosh Desai was questioned over the efficacy of the tenant verification exercise, he put up a brave face saying the verification of tenants is underway in Salcete.

In fact, DySP Santosh sought to point out that not only the Goa police but the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) is involved in tenant verification exercise across the state.

“The local police carry out the exercise as part of the system. The ATS is also conducting a similar exercise and both the agencies share the inputs collected during the exercise”, he said, adding that the data collected is then shared with the police counterparts of the respective States.
