Chandor Club reach Seamen Cup semis

MARGAO
Chandor Club entered the last-four with a 2-0 win over Cuncolim Union in the 48th Chandor Seamen football tournament organised by Chandor Club at Chandor ground on Saturday.

Chandor boys missed at least two good attempts at opening their account. The Cuncolim lads also exerted enough pressure but with no success.

Chandor went all out and were rewarded in the 42nd minute when a swift pass from Moises D'Sa from the midfield was received by Vitorino Fernandes, who dribbled past the defence and placed the ball into the Cuncolim net. With Chandor getting the upper hand, it was as if Cuncolim lost their will to win and were slowed down a bit.

Chandor consolidated their lead in the 53rd minute, capitalising on a cross from the wings. Alreach Peixoto connected to make it 2-0. Vitorino Fernandes was awarded the Man of the Match prize.

CAC Cansaulim ease into last-four
CAC Cansaulim blanked a spirited Augustias Sporting Club Pomburpa 2-0 to enter the semifinals of the VM Salgaocar Memorial Invitational football tournament organised by Prime SC in association with Margao SC at St John Baptist ground, Dando Benaulim.

Pomburpa made a poor start to concede two goals inside the first quarter. The first strike was a self-goal and the second came through the boots of rival striker Selwyn Soares. The Bardez outfit came back strongly only for Cansaulim goalkeeper Anish Naik to make a string of saves to get his team through to the semifinals.

Cansaulim winger Asher Correia found space on the right, and he sent in a low cross that eluded all in the box and struck the leg of Pomburpa right-back Sachin Dongrekar and went into the net in the 2nd minute. Before Pombupa could recover from the setback, Cansaulim doubled their lead when striker Selwyn Soares pounced on a stray ball on top of the box and struck a right-footer past Naveed Almeida in the rival goal in the 12th minute. Cansaulim, spurred by the success, dominated the proceedings but were unable to get more goals.

After resumption, Pomburpa were a much-changed side with midfielders Carlton Cabral, Akshay Shirodkar and Prince Fernandes combining well to feed their strikers Rohan Naik and Deepak Shirodkar. Cansaulim were rescued by their goalkeeper Anish Naik, who tipped the ball over a fierce free kick of Pomburpa's pony-tailed midfielder David Pereira.

Augustias again came close to finding the net but a left-footer by Toheb Varkar was punched out by the confident Anish Naik to keep a clean sheet. The special guest for the match, Adrian Torres, Marketing Manager of The Navhind Times, was introduced to the teams by Brian A Dias, the organising secretary.
