Varun Sahni bid farewell with his term as vice-chancellor ending on Wednesday even as the Goa University's search for a successor is expected to gain steam with interviews of short-listed candidates slated for August 25.
In the meanwhile, Prof M K Janarthanam has been named interim vice chancellor on an acting basis.
The process to select Sahni's successor had been initiated several weeks ago by the Chancellor and then Governor of Goa Bhagat Singh Koshiyari by seeking applications and over 250 academicians from across the country had applied for the position.
Koshiyari had also set up a three-member search committee comprising CSIR director-general Dr Shekar Mande, former NCERT director Jagmohan Singh Rajput and Dr Satish Reddy of DRDO which screened the applicants and shortlisted 23 of them. Their interviews are expected to be conducted on August 25.
Meanwhile, Sahni was accorded a farewell at a function in his office on Wednesday with limited attendance from faculty and some students due to Covid protocols. Several others watched the event online.
The vice-chancellor's term is of five years.
