In an ongoing effort to prevent the establishment of a controversial nightclub in the serene village of Assagao, members of the Assagao-Badem Citizen’s Action Committee (ABCAC) met with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday.
The Chief Minister assured the delegation that the government would not permit the setting up of the nightclub in the village.
A delegation led by ABCAC Convenor Surendra Gad met with the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at his office in the Secretariat where the CM was informed about the current situation, emphasising the residents' strong opposition to the nightclub.
According to Gad, the chief minister was already aware of the matter and promised the delegation that the nightclub would not be allowed to operate in Assagao.
“The chief minister has assured us that he will not allow the operation of a nightclub in the village. He said the proprietor is free to run a bar and restaurant but no nightclub business will be allowed on the premises,” Gad told The Goan.
The ABCAC convenor said Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo and Sarpanch Hanumant Naik were also scheduled to join the delegation but were unable to attend due to prior commitments.
Gad described the meeting with the CM as cordial and positive.
“We had a very cordial and positive interaction with the CM. He was well-versed with the issue. His assurance has given new hope to the villagers of Assagao,” Gad said.
The ABCAC convenor emphasised that the committee would continue to monitor the situation to ensure that the matter reaches a satisfactory conclusion. The villagers of Assagao, under the banner of ABCAC, have been vocal in their opposition to the nightclub's establishment in their residential area.
Reflecting the public sentiment, the Assagao panchayat, which had initially allowed the proprietor to set up a bar and restaurant at the site, has now decided to deny the premises a No Objection Certificate (NOC) and a trade license for operating a nightclub.
