Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira on Thursday raised concerns in the Goa Legislative Assembly over the ongoing erection of 220KV power transmission towers in Saligao, alleging that the work is being carried out without transparency and has led to rampant landfilling in low-lying areas and paddy fields.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ferreira said that the Electricity Department has failed to put up any display boards informing locals about the nature and scope of the project, its timeline, or the extent of landfilling being carried out. “There is no board indicating what work is being undertaken, when it began, and when it will be completed. This is particularly alarming as the work involves filling of agricultural land, and there’s no clarity on when the filling will be removed,” Ferreira said.

Such towers are come up in the fields in Moira and Bastora.

In response, Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar clarified that the construction is part of a larger project to set up a major electric substation in Saligao, which is scheduled for completion by December this year. Dhavalikar said, “I have been informed that these fields are barren and currently uncultivated. The landfilling that has been done will be removed after the work is completed.”
