Residents of Assolna, a riverside village along the Sal, urged South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes on Saturday to work towards bringing Goa’s rivers, including the Sal, back under the Goa government’s control.

Led by Remedios, the villagers highlighted the problems faced by fishermen due to pollution in the river. They also called for a dedicated berthing area for fishing vessels at Cutbona, stating that the current situation damages traditional fishermen’s nets.

The MP visited Colleamwaddo-Assolna with Congress South Goa President Savio D’Silva and activist Anthony D’Silva to hear the fishermen’s concerns.

Remedios asked the MP to fight in Delhi to prevent the Centre from taking control of Goa’s rivers, citing how Kerala stopped the Centre from taking over its rivers.

The MP said he has already raised fishermen’s issues in Parliament after his 2024 election and is fighting against the nationalisation of Goan rivers. He assured the villagers that he will raise their issues in Parliament, and those that cannot be taken up due to time limits will be discussed directly with the concerned minister.
