A woman from Zuarinagar has lodged a police complaint after being cheated of Rs 2.31 lakh in an elaborate online scam involving a fake work-from-home job offer between May 4 and May 24.

In a complaint, Yashika Chopra of MVR Homes in Zuarinagar said the accused persons had contacted her through WhatsApp and Telegram, offering a work-from-home job involving tasks like hotel rating.

The complainant stated that the accused added her to a Telegram group named “Merchant Welfare Task” and induced her to invest money in various bank accounts under the guise of job-related tasks.

Believing the offer to be legitimate, Chopra transferred funds from her own and her husband’s bank accounts across multiple transactions, suffering a total loss of  Rs 2,31,000.

When Chopra realised she had been cheated, she subsequently approached Verna police and registered a formal complaint.

Verna police have filed a case under Section 318(4) read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 66-D of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008.

The investigation is being carried out by Verna Police Inspector Anand Shirodkar under the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.

Police have advised citizens to be extremely cautious while accepting online job offers, especially those involving financial transactions, and to verify the authenticity of such job postings.
