Attempt by officials to convince Aldona MLA on Porvorim STP bears no fruit

The State government’s attempts to break the ice against the opposition to the sewage treatment plant (STP) for Porvorim was stonewalled by Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo and the locals, who stood their ground opposing the second STP.

The Deputy General Manager of the Sewerage & Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL), Ganesh Kodlekere, along with two other staff, rushed to the office of the MLA on Friday to explain the requirement and significance of the second STP in the area.

Aldona MLA, Glen Ticlo, local councilor Marlene D’Souza and five other residents went into a huddle with the deputy general manager of SIDCGL explaining to them that the STP was not only for Porvorim but for other surrounding villages.

They were informed that the capacity of the STP would be 20 MLD while the Mapusa STP has capacity of around 7 MLD.

The Aldonal MLA along with the local councilor and the residents refused to buy the argument of the SIDCGL official and stuck to their guns to oppose the STP.

The MLA asked the official why he and the local councilor were not informed about the project. He also questioned the department’s crafty way of trying to push the project by giving misleading information.

He said Mapusa Comundidade and the church gave NOC for only Mapusa STP and not for STP for Porvorim or other villages.

Councilor Marlene D’Souza also said that they have given permission only to the JICA STP for Mapusa and refused to allow the Porvorim STP in the area.

The local residents told the SIDCGL official that they will never allow the Porvorim STP and will do everything possible to stop the work.

We will discuss the issue, says SIDCGL Dy General Manager
MAPUSA: The Deputy General Manager of the Sewerage & Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL), Ganesh Kodlekere, admitted that Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo and the locals expressed their opposition to the second phase STP.
“We met the local MLA and a few residents and tried to explain to them about the project. Unfortunately, they said they did not want the dirt from other constituencies in their area,” Kodlekere said.  On the department’s next course of action, he said the chairman and vice chairman of SIDCGL will soon meet to discuss on the issue.  “We will have a meeting with the chairman, vice chairman and the managing director and find a solution,” he said. PWD Minister Sudin Dhavlikar is the chairman and Sanjiv Dessai is the vice-chairman.
