Margao Municipal garbage vehicles lying at the municipal garage have come under the lens of workers as well as citizens.
In fact, sources in the know have demanded an audit of the number of vehicles, including garbage vehicles, with the civic body and those in running condition.
Sources further said the MMC should maintain an audit on the amount of money spent on the maintenance of vehicles to ensure transparency and accountability.
If workers and citizens are to be believed, a number of vehicles, including garbage compactors, are lying idle in the municipal garage for want of proper upkeep and maintenance.
In fact, of the five garbage compactors with the civic body, only three are presently in working condition, collecting the daily garbage generated in the city. The remaining two compactors are lying idle in the garage awaiting repairs and maintenance.
Besides compactors, a mini-truck, rickshaw etc are also lying idle in the garage, sources pointed out, throwing up questions why the vehicles are maintained in a running condition when the MMC is spending money on engineers and mechanic to look after the vehicles.
“When the Civic body is spending huge amount of money on the maintenance of the vehicles, there ought to be accountability and transparency in the matter. Finally, the Municipality is spending tax payer’s money on the vehicles and the manpower appointed to look after the maintenance’, sources said.
