Margao Municipal Councilor Babita Naik is all set to occupy the hot seat of Margao Municipal Vice-Chairperson after Margao MLA Digambar Kamat unveiled Babita’s candidature for the vacant post before the ruling BJP Councilors on Monday.

Since the presiding Officer has received Babita’s lone nomination paper proposed by three Councilors, and the Goa Forward backed group staying away from the election, her election as the new Vice-Chairperson will be a formality on Tuesday.

Babita’s candidature for the vice-Chairperson’s post left vacant by the resignation of outgoing VCP Deepali Sawal, was cleared at a meeting the ruling BJP Councilors had with Margao MLA in the city here on Monday.

Sources in the know informed that Kamat is believed to have zeroed in on Babita’s candidature on the plea that she was promised in the past that she would succeed  Deepali Sawal as the next VCP.

After her candidature was unveiled by Kamat, the ruling group of Councillors led by Chairperson Damu Shirodkar later accompanied Babita  to the office of the Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar to file the nomination papers.

Her candidature was proposed by Chairperson Damu Shirodkar, outgoing vice-chairperson Deepali Sawal and Councillor Camilo Barretto, the last named who had expressed his wish to contest the vacant post. Camilo’s claim, however, did not find favour with the BJP leadership.
