As part of the review, the Tourism Minister has directed the relaunch of the WhatsApp system of notifying the department to clear garbage on the beach.
“A new WhatsApp initiative is being set up by the existing contractor and will be monitored round-the-clock by the department of Tourism,” the Tourism department said in a statement after the meeting concluded.
Currently, cleaning of the garbage from the beaches is being done by the Drishti agency which also looks after life guarding services along the State’s beaches.

Azgaonkar has also instructed the department of Tourism to expedite the tendering process for beach cleaning works in a time bound manner.
The Minister also reviewed the status of the projects to construct toilets, urinals and changing rooms and other utility facilities on the beaches.
The meeting was attended by Director of Tourism, Menino D’Souza, Managing Director GTDC, Nikhil Desai, officials from the department of Tourism and others.
The officials have been instructed to submit a status report on various issues and activities within a week’s time.
