“We will visit and inspect all entry points of Mapusa on May 9, to get first-hand information on the need to control entry of vehicles and introducing speed limit,” said Ratnapal Salkar, chairman of the committee.
The decision was taken during the meeting of MMC’s Road Safety and Traffic Management Committee. MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar and representatives of Assistant Director of Transport, Mapusa Traffic Police, Roland Martins of GOACAN and others were present.
Salkar said that the committee members will visit entry points at Carrasvaddo, Colvale, Mapusa Tar, Hotel Green Park and Khorlim.
Martins suggested the need to engage with Mapusa Merchants’ association to discuss the possibility to pedestrianize the old Mapusa market.
“Old Mapusa market is a historic place. We can always discuss with stakeholders to look into the possibility of allowing people to walk around the market without the fear of vehicles zooming by,” Martins said.
He also stressed on forming road safety patrols in colleges and schools.
In a bid to encourage a consultation process among stake holders, the GOACAN coordinator has called for presentation of the new Mapusa bus-stand plan.
“The committee will also identify accident spots and suggest making certain roads as one-way,” Salkar said.
The panel committee has further sought information on various no-entry roads, zebra crossing and other details from Mapusa Traffic Police.
