Residents of Baina have demanded the removal of iron rods at the floating jetty built by Drishti at Baina beach some time ago for a proposed ferry service.
Residents claim that while the main jetty at the beach has already been removed, the iron rods below the jetty are still present in the sea and pose a grave danger to tourists and locals alike.
Adv Birendra Singh of Baina said the rods at the jetty were not visible during high tide but are exposed when the water receded during low tide.
"We have a lot of locals and tourists visiting the beach and many of them go for a swim as well. It is dangerous because these rods are sharp and corroded. Those swimming in the water may be unaware of the rods hidden underwater during high tide. The rods have to be removed immediately," said Singh.
Ward councillor Murari Bandekar said the people had complained to him and Mormugao MLA and Urban Development Minister Milind Naik about the iron rods in the sea.
"Drishti has removed the jetty, but the iron rods have not been discarded as yet. After many people approached me, I took them to Urban Development Minister Milind Naik and he immediately took note of this situation. He spoke to Drishti officials and engineers and instructed them to remove the rods immediately.”
“The Drishti has now assured to send their officials and engineers immediately for a site inspection and get the rods removed immediately," said Bandekar.
