MAPUSA

A youth from Mumbai was nabbed while attempting to withdraw money by using a stolen ATM card in Mapusa, after swapping the ATM card of a senior citizen.

The accused, Arif Mohammad Sayyed (22) of Ulhasnagar-Mumbai was later found to have had eight cases registered against him in Maharashtra.

According to police reports, the incident took place on Tuesday afternoon, when the accused, Sayyed entered the ATM of a nationalised bank in Mapusa with the intention of withdrawing money.

Around that time, an elderly person also went to the ATM to withdraw money and Sayyed offered to help the man.

The security guard stationed at the ATM found Sayyed’s behaviour suspicious and alerted Mapusa police.

By that time, the suspect had noted the PIN number of the senior citizen’s ATM card and had exchanged his ATM card.

The senior citizen did not suspect that his ATM card had been swapped and left the ATM room after realising that his money was not coming out of the ATM.

The accused then used the stolen ATM machine and while withdrawing the money, the police caught him red-handed, after having withdrawn Rs 3,000 through the stolen ATM card.

Mapusa police took the accused to the police station for questioning and it was found that the accused has been targetting senior citizens by swapping their ATM cards and then withdrawing cash from their accounts.

Mapusa police later arrested Sayyed and further investigation is in progress under the guidance of Police Inspector Nikhil Palekar.
