The recently appointed official contractor tasked with collecting Sopo (market fees) in Mapusa’s municipal market is facing stiff competition from an unauthorised collector.
A man named Arif, allegedly backed by an influential councillor and a prominent BJP politician has been collecting Sopo unofficially from market vendors, leading to confusion and unrest.
Sources within the Mapusa Municipal Council have revealed that Arif, a temporary worker, has been assigned the role of a supervisor in the market.
Despite his temporary status, his influence over the vendors appears significant, with many forced to comply with his demands and pay a regular “hafta” to avoid trouble.
This unofficial Sopo collection has caused friction with the official contractor, who has struggled to collect the fees from vendors, many of whom refuse to pay again after already handing over money to Arif.
The official contractor, frustrated by the situation, has threatened to give up his contract if the issue is not addressed by the municipal authorities.
A senior councillor from the ruling side, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Arif enjoys strong political support, allowing him to operate with impunity.
“He is a temporary worker but has been given the authority of a supervisor in the market, specifically tasked with collecting money to serve his political bosses,” the councillor revealed.
This is not the first time Arif has been at the centre of controversy.
Several years ago, he was reportedly removed from his position following multiple complaints, but was reinstated later.
“I don’t understand why the current chief officer tolerates such behaviour, which brings disrepute to the council,” a former councillor remarked.
Attempts to reach MMC Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar for comment were unsuccessful.
However, a senior official from the civic body acknowledged the problems arising from Arif’s actions, confirming that the unofficial Sopo collection has created a nuisance in the market.
As tensions rise, there is growing pressure on the municipal authorities to resolve the issue and restore proper governance in the Mapusa market.
