Banners, hoardings to be taxed at Quepem

The Quepem Municipal Council (QMC) has decided to regulate the installation of banners and hoardings in the municipality, in a bid to add revenue to its coffers and to curb obstruction to commuters.
“From now on, banners and hoardings will need a licence/outward number by the QMC, else they will be removed from the site,” said QMC Chairperson Filu D'Costa.
It has been a common feature in Quepem town for prominent persons and establishments to install hoardings and banners all over the town. But the unregulated installation of hoardings and banners had been of concern to the QMC.
“The outward number or licence number with date will be displayed on all banners and hoardings. Any hoarding or banner without this number will be immediately removed. The QMC will also levy a fee on these hoardings and banners for the additional days exceeding the time limit,” the chairperson added.
“Banners will be charged at Rs 200 per metre. All those who have installed banners were informed about the hike in licence fees,” said D'Costa.
He informed that certain restrictions have been put in place on the installation of banners and hoardings.
“Banners will be not allowed at the municipal garden railings and those places which obstruct commuters. A 10-day time limit will be granted for banners only for Ganesh Chaturthi and Christmas festival,” he said.
Asked to explain the purpose of this decision, D'Costa said, “This move will generate revenue for the municipal council. It will also keep a check on those banners causing problem to commuters.”
