In a bid to stop the nuisance of dumping waste in open spaces, the panchayat has decided to install such cameras at three other spots - Chandanwadi, Boa Vista and Xell - in the village where people constantly dump garbage.
The sarpanch said he expected the camera to act as a deterrent for people to stop dumping waste in open areas.
"The panchayat secretary can issue fines to people caught dumping garbage in public places. I will also not hesitate to file an FIR against the offenders," Martins said.
The sarpanch said, so far Bastora panchayat was collecting only plastic waste once a week from each of the wards. "From October 15, we will collect all dry garbage including plastic once a week," he added.
There are around 1,200 houses in Bastora. The dry waste collected from each will be dumped in the open space near the panchayat from where the Goa Waste Management Corporation will collect it once in 15 days.
He further said the garbage committee has suggested charging of a nominal fee for collection of dry waste. "The panchayat has plans to charge Rs 100 per annum per house as garbage tax. We will place it before the next gram sabha," he said.
