Behaviour of MGP appears unnatural: Vijai

Says Congress organisational leaders planning to get assembly dissolved, but party MLAs not in favour

MARGAO

Asserting that the behaviour of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party appears to be unnatural, Goa Forward Party chief, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai, on Saturday, said that the coalition government may have to encounter a tricky situation if the leadership of the former (MGP) falls prey to the machinations of the Congress party leaders who are working towards dissolution of the Assembly.

He, however, said that the coalition government will take the step forward after assessing the situation after the declaration of the by-polls.

“The behaviour of the MGP appears to be unnatural. May be this is perhaps because MGP is facing a dilemma, which the GFP does not. Both the GFP and the MGP have three MLAs , but while we all three are ministers, only two of the MGP MLAs are in the cabinet,” he said,.

Sardesai further said “it is evident that there’s a group within the MGP legislature party, which constitutes a two-third majority. May be, the party leadership has an urge to become four, which will reduce the advantage enjoyed by the group holding the two-third majority,” adding “may be this is one reason behind doing the unnatural thing of contesting the Shiroda by-poll”.

Warning the MGP leadership that the party may fall prey to the machinations of the Congress leadership to take the State towards dissolution, the GFP chief also hit out at the Congress party leaders for working overtime to get the Assembly dissolved.

“No one wants dissolution, except the Congress

organisational leaders. Even the Congress MLAs are not in favour of dissolution since it’s just two years since the people of Goa had elected them to take up developmental works in their respective constituencies. But certain Congress leaders forming part of the organisation want dissolution and early election because they want to trade the tickets,” he asserted.

MGP President Deepak Dhavalikar had last week offered a coconut to the Kamaxi deity, literally kick starting the party’s campaign for Shiroda. In fact, Deepak had reminded the media that the MGP had polled around 5500 votes in the 2017 Assembly election, indicating that Shiroda constituency is not new to Goa’s oldest political party.

That’s not all. Deepak had taken the stand that those who have voluntarily quit the Assembly had no right to contest again, saying the MGP will go to the people’s court to negate efforts by Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte to get into the Assembly on the BJP banner.
