BELAGAVI
Reeling under the fear of frequent attacks on doctors, the medical fraternity of Belagavi has appealed to authorities to initiate action against those involved in these attacks or else they would be compelled to shut down hospitals in the city and district.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the IMA Belagavi to condemn the attack on a private hospital in the city where a duty doctor and a nurse were injured.

The medical fraternity is reeling under fear after a mob of about 200 people attacked Mai hospital, Shahapur, at around 10.30 pm on Sunday, demanding why the hospital had been treating Covid patients.

“A doctor and a nurse in the hospital were assaulted in the incident. There were a few people in an inebriated condition,” said Dr Milind Halgekar during the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, IMA President Dr Anil Patil said hospitals, doctors and medical staff in the city are working overtime risking their lives and the lives of their families.

“However, the medical fraternity is demoralised with the rising attacks. We urge authorities to initiate action against those involved in the attacks and provide protection to hospitals treating Covid patients,” Dr Patil said.

Dr Shashikant Kulgod suggested that a legal advisor be appointed to the IMA to handle such matters. Dr B H Metgud, Dr Rohit Joshi and other doctors were present.

The IMA team later visited Belagavi Deputy Commissioner M G Hiremath and Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi and narrated the incident. They have demanded action against those involved in attacks and to provide security to the hospitals.
