Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuemkar on Monday inaugurated the traffic signals at the accident-prone western bypass junction at Bellem-Navelim.
After inaugurating the traffic signals, the MLA promised the people that he would pursue with the government the proposal to build a flyover at the junction as part of a permanent solution to the problem.
Navelim Sarpanch Bevinda Gonsalves, Telaulim Sarpanch Esteven Goes, besides BJP Gen Secretary Deepak Sawant, Yuva President Tarun Patel, Rumdamol Deputy Sarpanch Madukala Shirodkar and others were present.
Ulhas, who monitored the traffic movement after the inauguration of the traffic signals, told the media, “I have observed that the traffic signals will only give temporary relief to the traffic confusion at Belem. As the bypass is expected to take the heavy traffic load plying on the National highway between Kerala and Maharashtra, I will take pursue te need for a flyover at the junction,” he added.
The gram sabha of the village panchayats of Navelim and Telaulim have adopted resolutions demanding the construction of a bypass at the Belem junction to overcome the traffic snalrs.
Incidentally, while a number of underpasses have been planned along the western bypass at Seraulim, Mungul, Khareband and Benaulim, an underpass was not proposed at Belem for reasons best known to the powers that be.
