Benaulim witnessed an uproar on Friday after the locals caught red-handed a food contractor from Per-Seraulim for disposing of wet and dry waste in the Pedda area of the village.
The agitated residents got the contractor and his men to clear the entire roadside of the waste. They have asked the Benaulim panchayat to prosecute the violator as per the rules.
Youths from Pedda-Benaulim had maintained vigil along the isolated road near the church after they came across mixed garbage being disposed of along the roadside.
Roque Fernandes told the media that the mixed garbage was being disposed of along the isolated road for the last several days, prompting the local youths to maintain vigil. He said the youths managed to track the erring person, who was hailing from the neighbouring village of Per-Seraulim.
Inquiries revealed that the violator was preparing food at his residence and supplying it to Verna.
Benaulim panch Manoj Kesarkar said the waste dumping has been the handiwork of a migrant, who was preparing food at Seraulim and supplying the same at Verna. He appealed to the people of Benaulim and the neighbouring villages of Colva and Seraulim to ensure that tenants staying in the rented premises dispose of their waste as per the rules.
“The mixed garbage dumped at Pedda has rotted emanating foul odour,” he said, demanding to know how can the farmers harvest the fields when the road passing through is rotting with waste.
The erring food supplier apologised to the villagers and promised he will never dispose of his waste along the roadside. He agreed to collect all the waste dumped along the roadside.
