MARGAO
With two days to go for keenly contested elections for the Goa Football Association, outgoing GFA president Churchill Alemao has exuded confidence that football clubs from across the State would rally behind his son Savio for the post of the president.
Churchill said he has full faith and trust in the football clubs that they will back his son for the coveted post. For, he pointed out that he had helped the clubs in "one way or other over the years" and they know "the contribution of Churchill and his family towards the promotion of football".
“The football clubs across the State are aware of my contribution to football. They know my passion for football and are aware how I have developed the sport over the years,” he said.
Demanding to know whether any other family is involved in running a football club in the country, Churchill said Churchill Brothers is the only family that has been promoting football over the decades. Saying he had taken over the reins of the GFA with a host of plans to give a boost to football in the State, Churchill, however, said the COVID-19 pandemic came in the way of implementing the plans for two years.
“No football tournaments took place during the two years when COVID pandemic hit the world. No First Division and Second Division matches could be played. The GFA faced the problem of funds,” he said, adding that he had to ask the government to sanction funds for the association.
