Better late than never, MMC wakes up after flooding

MARGAO

With the civic babus and the city fathers having been caught off guard by flooding of main roads during Tuesday’s pre-monsoon showers, Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes has got down to business by holding a review meeting with the officials to discuss how to contain flooding during the monsoon.

In another development, municipal workers concentrated on two flood-prone areas of the city, the Gandhi market and Cine Lata hutment colony, which bore the brunt of the floods during the pre-monsoon rains. The municipal authorities also took serious note of the incident on Tuesday when water entered the housing society near Cine Lata.

“We had a review meeting concerning monsoon preparedness in the city. We have identified the Gandhi market and the Cine Lata area as flood prone areas. Accordingly, MMC workers were drafted for cleaning of drains and gutters in these two localities on Wednesday since they are inhabited by people,” Johnson told The Goan.

Taking cognizance of flooding all round the municipal square, specially the road between the municipal building and the garden, Johnson attributed the situation to the narrow drains, adding

that the PWD will be immediately told to find a solution to the issue.

Meanwhile, PWD officials pointed out that clear instructions have been issued to the workers manning the Comba subway to ensure that all the pumps are put to use to pump out water during the rains. “We have deployed workers in shifts, right from morning till late in the evening to operate the water pumps so that the subway does not remain submerged during the rains”, informed a PWD engineer.
