Traffic violations along 13 major points in Panaji, Merces junction, Porvorim and Dona Paula will now be monitored electronically with the Directorate of Transport announcing the implementation of Electronic Enforcement under section 136-A of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.
This revolutionary system will leverage cutting-edge technology to detect and penalise traffic offences recorded on the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) starting from midnight on May 22, 2023. The system will generate an e-challan via SMS to the registered mobile number of the vehicle owner involved in the violation.
Officials said that the Electronic Enforcement system is fitted with state-of-the-art cameras and sensors to identify any violations including overspeeding, red light jumping, lane-cutting, etc.
The rising number of accidents on Goa's roads has been a cause for concern with many of them including fatalities being attributed to negligent driving, overspeeding, non-wearing of helmet and drunken driving.
“This new measure is a crucial step towards achieving the Goa Government's vision of creating a safe, secure, and sustainable transport system. We are optimistic that the use of technology will instill a greater sense of discipline and responsibility among riders and drivers,” the transport official said.
The locations include Divja Circle, Custom House Junction, Ferry Wharf Junction, all in Panaji; Malim Junction, Hero Honda Junction, ACDIL School junction (on the road leading to Panaji), O’Coqueiro junction, all in Porvorim; Science Centre, St Michael School to Miramar-Taleigao road and vice-versa, Goa University “ Dona Paula road and vice versa, and Merces junction.
The department also intends to include other locations under the implementation, which will be subsequently notified.
