As the demand for political reservation gains momentum in Goa following calls for Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservation in the State Legislative Assembly, the Bhandari Samaj of Quepem taluka has now sought political reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community.
At a news conference in Quepem, Bhandari Samaj leaders urged the government to begin the necessary constitutional, legal and empirical process to examine and ensure adequate representation for OBC communities in the Goa Legislative Assembly.
The leaders said the demand was aimed at securing fair and adequate political representation for the OBC community in the State’s electoral and democratic process.
They urged the government to examine the issue of OBC representation and take appropriate steps based on constitutional and legal provisions and relevant data.
The news conference was attended by former Curchorem MLA Shyam Satardekar, former Curchorem Municipal Councillor Pradip Naik, former Quepem Municipal Council chairperson Darshan Naik, former councillor Rucha Vast, and several OBC and Bhandari Samaj leaders.
The demand by the Quepem Bhandari Samaj is expected to add a new dimension to the ongoing debate in Goa over political reservation and the representation of various communities in the State Legislative Assembly.
