A motorcycle rider was seriously injured, while two others escaped without harm, after an inter-state truck hit two motorcycles on the Maxem-Galgibaga bridge at the start of the Canacona bypass in Maxem-Loliem on Thursday night.
Sources said the two motorcycles, coming from Karwar, were moving slowly in the two-wheeler lane of the four-lane bypass when the truck approached from behind. It first hit one motorcycle, throwing the rider off the bike, and then struck the second motorcycle travelling in the same direction.
The two riders on the Enfield bike managed to escape by jumping off just as the truck hit their vehicle, which got stuck under the truck’s front bumper. The rider on the Yamaha bike was critically injured and was first taken to Canacona CHC, then referred to the South Goa District Hospital.
When questioned, the truck driver claimed that an oncoming vehicle forced him to swerve into the motorcycle lane, causing the crash. Canacona police later arrived at the scene, took the driver into custody, and sent him for a medical check-up.
One of the riders who escaped said their Enfield was just three months old, and they were travelling from Karwar to Margao when the truck hit them from behind.
