A mob attack on an unidentified person, agedaround 30 years, over the alleged theft of a motorcycle resulted in his death,prompting the police to register a murder case against the accused persons.
The Maina-Curtorim police have so far arrestedthree suspects in connection with the murder. The police have also constitutedmultiple teams in search of the remaining accused persons, who were part of themob that assaulted the deceased.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening whena group of individuals intercepted and assaulted an unknown male person withkicks and fist blows on suspicion of his involvement in the theft of atwo-wheeler earlier in the evening.
Maina-Curtorim police informed that while thealleged theft incident occurred in Seraulim village, the assault on themotorcycle theft suspect took place in Nuvem late Thursday night.
Police said the incident occurred after themotorcycle in question went missing after the rider parked the two-wheeler onthe roadside at Seraulim before going to watch a football match. Upon hisreturn, the rider found the motorcycle stolen and, after a search with the helpof CCTV cameras, zeroed in on the theft suspect when he was found walking onthe road.
Police said that a group of persons finallyrecovered the motorcycle at the instance of the theft suspect after an overtwo-hour search, before giving him a sound thrashing.
The theft suspect was later rushed to theSouth Goa district hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Superintendent of Police, South, Tikam Singh,told the media that the Maina-Curtorim police had acted swiftly by registeringthe FIR and arresting three suspects.
He said the police had also secured the stolentwo-wheeler. “Multiple police teams have been mobilised to identify, verify theroles of, and apprehend all remaining associates and individuals involved inthe unlawful gathering and assault.”
SP warns against mob justice after fatal assault
MARGAO: Following the death of the bike theft suspect,the South Goa Superintendent of Police, Tikam Singh, has issued a publicadvisory and warning to the public not to take the law into their own hands.
The advisory has urged citizens to promptlyhand over suspected offenders to the nearest police station or dial 112 forimmediate assistance.
