Bio-methanation plant continues to hit roadblock over power woes

MARGAO
Functioning of Margao Municipal Council’s ambitious 5 TPD bio-methanation plant set up at the SGPDA market continues to be hit by a road block over power issues.

Commissioned with much fanfare on the eve of Diwali festival on November 3 last, the plant is not working to its capacity, leave alone generate electricity from the bio-methanation process.

When The Goan team descended at the SGPDA market, the power generating unit was found locked. At the adjoining waste treatment facility, a security guard was taking rest on the floor. Around three bins were found placed outside the shed, but there was no treatment of waste inside.

Upon inquiries, it was revealed that no waste has been treated at the bio-methanation plant for the last couple of days for want of electricity.

Inquiries with the company representatives further revealed that the Margao Municipal Council has now laid a dedicated underground cable, connecting the plant to the power line. However, the plant is still not in operation as the Power department hasn’t yet fixed the electric metre, which will facilitate consumption of power supply to the unit.

In fact, it would be two months on Monday, but the promised treatment of 5 TPD waste from the SGPDA vegetable market could not be treated by the plant over electricity issues. The promised generation of 450 units of power per day by the bio-methanation plant too has not materialised, again over the issue of power supply.
