The 5TPD bio-methanation plant may provide small relief to the waste managers, struggling to manage the Sonsodo imbroglio. But, the MMC has a long way to go before the Sonsodo issue is capped once and for all.
For, Sonsodo receives around 35 tonnes of wet waste on an average per day. While the lone bio-methanation plant will treat 5TPD waste generated in the PDA market, the MMC still has a task at hand how to handle the balance 35TPD waste that finds its way to the defunct Sonsodo waste treatment plant every day.
Presently, not a single tonne of the 35 tonnes waste transported to Sonsodo is treated by the waste treatment plant. The plan to repair and run the plant by roping in a contractor is yet to take off. Similarly, the plan to set up two 25TPD bio-methanation plants at Sonsodo is at the initial stage, with technical experts yet to give a nod for the project.
With open waste dumping at Sonsodo banned, the waste treatment plant has come in handy for the MMC to unload the daily 35 tonnes of waste and compact the waste inside the plant with the help of heavy earth moving machinery.
