A 26-year-old rider from Nachinola was killed in a road mishap on her birthday when her EV scooter and a truck collided near the State Bank of India at Cansa-Tivim on Saturday afternoon. The truck driver has been arrested.

Colvale police said the mishap took place at about 1 pm when the truck was proceeding towards Assonora, while the deceased, Sujata Salgaonkar, a delivery person with an e-commerce company, was on an EV scooter in the opposite direction.

Salgaonkar was seriously injured in the mishap while the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled from the spot.

The grievously injured rider was rushed to the Mapusa District Hospital for treatment, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Colvale Police Inspector Vijay Rane along with a team went to the site and conducted the panchanama.

On receiving news of the fatal mishap, family members and locals from Nachinola rushed to the Colvale police station and refused to leave the police station till the truck driver is arrested.

Colvale police then learnt that the truck driver, Pramod Gawas (45) went straight to his home in Valpoi after the mishap. PI Rane and a police team went to Valpoi late Saturday evening and arrested him. Further investigations are in progress.

Incidentally, Sujata Salgaonkar was the cousin of Priyal Salgaonkar of Nachinola, who had died along with three other schoolgirls and two adults when a bus had plunged into the Calvim River on February 18, 2012.
