Archbishop of Goa and President of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, has said that the role of a bishop is both demanding and deeply meaningful and requires collaboration, humility and tireless dedication.
Cardinal Ferrão, who is also President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), was speaking at the Episcopal Ordination of Goan-origin Monsignor Stephen Fernandes as Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay at the Salvation Church, Dadar, Mumbai, on January 3.
He said that an episcopal ordination reminds the faithful that the Church is not built only on structures or institutions, but on lives generously offered in service. Referring to Bishop Stephen’s journey, the Cardinal said it has been marked by faith, perseverance and a deep spirit of service.
Although Bishop Stephen’s priestly ministry was mainly in administrative and magisterial roles, Cardinal Ferrão said he comes across as an attentive, approachable and deeply committed priest.
Describing the role of an Auxiliary Bishop as demanding and meaningful, he stressed that it calls for collaboration, humility and dedication.
He added that Bishop Stephen is called to support his Archbishop in shepherding a vast and diverse Archdiocese, rich in cultures, languages and traditions.
The Cardinal said that Bishop Stephen is not alone in his mission and carries with him the prayers of the faithful, the support of brother priests and the encouragement of religious and lay communities of the Archdiocese. He said the qualities of mind and heart that Bishop Stephen is blessed with make him not only a leader, but also a pastor and a father to his flock.
Cardinal Ferrão also thanked those who have shaped Bishop Stephen’s vocation, including his family, formators, mentors, colleagues and the communities he has served, saying their faith, sacrifices and encouragement have prepared him for this sacred ministry.
In his message to the new bishop, the Cardinal said he is called to teach with clarity, to sanctify with compassion and to govern with wisdom. Above all, he said, Bishop Stephen must be a visible sign of Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
Referring to the symbols received at ordination “ the ring, the mitre and the crozier “ he said they are reminders of a great responsibility and a call to fidelity, service and pastoral care.
Stating that the Church in Mumbai and in India rejoices with Bishop Stephen, Cardinal Ferrão assured him of his prayers, support and collaboration as he begins this new chapter of service to the Church.
