Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Sarvanand Bhagat on Friday said the party has accepted the Lok Sabha mandate given by the people of South Goa and would soon do an introspection about the causes behind the party’s defeat in the constituency.

He, however, hastened to add that it is too premature for the INDI Alliance to dream of forming the government in Goa, reminding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is forming the government at the centre for the third time on June 9, adding that the double-engine BJP government will complete the pending works before the 2027 Assembly polls.

Addressing the media at the South Goa BJP district office here in the presence of BJP ST Leader Anthony Barbosa and South Goa president Tulsidas Naik, the BJP general secretary said the party leadership will do an introspection over the debacle in South Goa.

"The party has lost the South Goa seat by around 14,000 votes. We accept the mandate of the people,” he said.

Referring to statements made in certain quarters blaming Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai’s statements for the defeat of the BJP, Bhagat said no one should indulge in giving religious colour to the verdict. “Minister Phal Dessai has managed to give a huge lead to the BJP. Those who seek to blame the Minister should stop doing so,” he said.

When his attention was drawn to the fact that the defectors have once again been shown the place by the people of Goa, Bhagat said all these aspects will be deliberated by the party during the introspection.
