BJP, Cong supporters caught in verbal clash

The BJP and Congress camps came face to face at Aquem midway through the polling for ward 21 of the Margao civic body on Sunday and the police had to intervene to separate the two groups from clashing with each other.

MARGAO:

The uproar occurred near the polling station housed at the St Joseph School, Aquem when the BJP camp comprising brothers, Bhai and Vinay Naik, objected to the continuance presence of Anil Shirodkar, the brother-in-law of Digambar Kamat-backed candidate Deepa Shirodkar.
Anil contended that he had come to the polling booth with his wife and asserted that the rival camp has no right to question his presence.
The incident occurred when Vinay Naik questioned Anil Shirodkar and point blank told him to leave the area. Vinay was soon joined by Bhai, as the two brothers were engaged in a verbal duel with Anil Shirodkar. The duo demanded to know how Anil, a government servant working in the Margao Municipal Council, can involve himself in politics, and asked the police to ensure that he stays away from the booth. Anil also questioned the presence of Bhai and Vinay near the booth and demanded action.
Anil’s brother Damu Shirodkar and his group soon rushed to the spot, even as the posse of policemen deployed at the booth, got the two groups separated.
Margao PI C L Patil also made his presence near the polling both at St Joseph polling station for the second time after a group of supporters of one candidate were found assembled near the gate.
