Welcoming the government's decision to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI), BJP leader Sheikh Riyaz on Monday blamed the organisation for allegedly disturbing the peaceful atmosphere in the State over the last many years.

Riyaz further suspected a Muslim leader belonging to the BJP for allegedly supporting the PFI, promising to unveil the name of the leader at the next media briefing.

Addressing the media along with Margao municipal councillor Mahesh Amonkar on Monday, Riyaz said the government's decision to ban the PFI was long overdue, blaming the organisation for vitiating the harmony in the State.

“Goan Muslims were not part of the PFI, but they hailed from outside the State. The organisation should be permanently banned, and those behind creating disturbances should be put behind bars,” he demanded.

Meanwhile, MMC BJP councillor Mahesh Amonkar has termed reports over the possibility of replacing Chief Minister Pramod Sawant as speculations.

“The CM has been doing good work for the people of Goa. I do not think the party will replace him,” he said.

Amonkar further pointed out that Margao MLA Digambar Kamat is on record saying he has joined the BJP unconditionally, adding that there is no move to replace the Chief Minister.
