The BJP has fielded the party’s top local leaders, besides a number of new faces, in the fray to contest elections to the 25-member Margao Municipal Council under the banner of Vibrant Margao in a bid to wrest control over the A-class municipal body after a decade and a half.
Promising to create an Atmanirbhar Margao under the banner of Vibrant Margao, a committee headed by BJP General Secretary Damu Naik, Rajendra Talak as its convenor, besides 15 other members on Friday unveiled the list of 25 candidates for the ensuing polls. Party leaders tried to woo the electorate by
saying the ruling government will devote attention to the woes plaguing the commercial capital.
A couple of these candidates have been former members of the Margao Municipal Council, but most of the candidates are new and young faces the party has fielded in the ensuing election.
Deputy Chief Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar’s brother and former Chairperson, Rajendra Ajgaonkar, sitting councillors BJP Margao block president Rupesh Mahatme and general secretary Ketan Kurtarkar and Sugandha Bandekar, Sharmad Raiturkar, grandson of former Minister late Babu Naik Prabhav Naik, former councillors, the husband-wife duo of Sadanand and Babita Naik were some of the noted faces in the list of candidates.
Briefing the media, Chairman of Vibrant Margao Damu Naik said the panel will guide the candidates after their election in the overall development of Margao city. “This panel will work not just for the cosmetic development of the city, but the overall development. Not just gutters and roads, but the city will witness overall development,” Damu said, while making a plea to Madgavkars and Fatordekars to vote and elect the candidates to the civic body.
In his address, Committee Convenor Rajendra Talak said the people of Margao and Fatorda will support the Vibrant Margao panel as they look forward to the development of the commercial capital. “To make Vibrant Margao, we have to vote the candidates to bring about the difference”, he added.
In his address, Deputy CM Manohar Ajgaonkar said the government headed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and the BJP leadership will strongly rally behind the candidates contesting on the Vibrant Margao panel. “People of Margao are aware of what has happened in the city during the last few years. Despite giving the highest revenue to the state exchequer, Margao is lagging behind. The Pramod Sawant government will fully support Vibrant Margao if the candidates are elected to the civic body,” Ajgaonkar said, while making a fervent plea to the citizens of Margao and Fatorda to support the panel to make Margao the number one council in the state.
