MARGAO
The Goa Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing Board had decided to tap the State’s vast tourism potential by venturing into wholesale marketing of vegetable, fruits, milk and livestock.
If a proposal mooted by the Board finds favour with the government, the marketing board, which has been playing the role of providing logistics and facilitating marketing, may well venture into wholesale business as well.
Board Chairman Prakash Velip informed that the State provides vast opportunities to delve into wholesale business given its status as the tourist destination. “If the government grants us the permission, the Board is all geared up to do wholesale business in vegetables, fruits, milk products. What we require is that the government should amend the Act to allow us to go into wholesale business. We have requested Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to grant the Board the nod to go into wholesale business,” he said.
He added: “Though vegetables are being supplied by the Goa Horticulture Corporation, there’s still vast scope for wholesale business in vegetables and fruits. We can procure apples from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Goa presently imports lakhs of litres of milk every day. We can also do wholesale business in milk,” he said, adding that venturing into wholesale business will keep the Board and the farmers in good stead.
