SANGUEM
Following a road mishap which claimed two lives at Cotarli-Sanguem on Sunday, Social Welfare Minister and Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai convened a joint meeting with villagers and government officials at Sateri Devasthan Hall in the village on Tuesday.
The meeting however did not arrive at any conclusive decision as the company officials, whose truck was involved in the accident, failed to attend the meeting.
Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai criticised the absence of company officials despite being informed of the meeting well in advance and assured his full support to the villagers in their actions and in getting their demands met.
Phaldessai also assured to get maximum compensation and financial support to the family of the deceased from the government.
Two persons, Manjyot Chari of Cotarli and a migrant labourer, Anand B, were killed in the accident on Sunday.
Incidentally, a younger brother of Manjyot Chari was also killed in a road mishap at the village five months back.
Locals said both accidents were caused due to the narrow internal road which is extensively being used by heavy vehicles transporting goods to and from the factories at the Xelpem Industrial Estate.
The villagers have been demanding discipline on road transport in the village, but to no avail.
During the meeting, Sanguem MLA Phaldessai directed Sanguem Deputy Collector Milind Velip to work out modalities for extension of the existing road in the village.
Phaldessai also assured a joint meeting with the industries minister and the forest minister along with the villagers to get the issue resolved.
The villagers present for the meeting, however, demanded a separate road for heavy vehicles transporting materials to the Xelpem Industrial Estate, as the village road is very narrow and passes through thickly populated areas.
