In a big boost to tourism in Vasco, a 16-seater passenger boat dedicated for island tours was launched on Sunday. The boat will be used for various sight-seeing activities in the sea to attract tourists.

The passenger tourist boat ‘Sea Lord II’ -- launched in the presence of Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida--

is registered under the Inland waterways Act and is awaiting final clearance.Speaking to reporters, Almeida said there are also other plans to boost tourism activity from Baina beach wherein he has requested the owner of the island to permit shacks on the island.

“We will use this boat for island tours from Baina beach and I request the Captain of Ports and Ports Minister Jayesh Salgaonkar to expedite this process. A lot of tourists move to other beaches... this facility will give a boost to tourism as Baina is much closer to the airport. I have also spoken to the island owner and we are in discussion to have shacks on the island. Navy was supposed to acquire the island but it is still belonging to a private owner. This boat is ready now and we may have a few more soon”, said Almeida

An initiative of Vasco MLA, this boat will be an alternative source of business for Mormugao Launch Owners Association (MLOA). The association has expressed gratitude for the initiative as it had been struggling  for business after the ban on iron ore activity at MPT.

MLOA member Simon Periera said plans were to offer sight seeing to the island and the tickets would be around Rs 300 per person.
