The first volume of a special edition book ‘Churches of Goa’ by The Goan newspaper featuring fascinating and short historical accounts of 55 churches across Goa was released at the Bishop’s House in Panaji on Wednesday, April 1.

Archbishop of Goa and Daman Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, also the President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India and President of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences, released the book in the presence of Auxiliary Bishop Simião Purificação Fernandes, Fr Joaquim Loiola Pereira (Secretary to Cardinal), Fr Apolinario (Apollo) Cardozo SJ (writer of the articles), and Joel Afonso (Editor, The Goan).

In his address after releasing the book, Cardinal Ferrão hoped such an initiative by The Goan work as an incentive for the Catholic faithful in India and across Asia to document the rich history of churches.

“The Churches of Goa stand as enduring witnesses to the deep and vibrant history of the Christian faith in Goa. For centuries, these sacred spaces have been more than architectural monuments; they have been living centres of worship, prayer, service and community life,” said Cardinal Ferrão.

Appreciating The Goan for the initiative, Cardinal Ferrão said, “this volume, Churches of Goa, brought out by The Goan, is indeed a timely and valuable initiative.”

“By providing a concise history of each Church and a commentary on its architectural beauty as well as on its conservation efforts over the years, the book highlights the rich spiritual and cultural heritage that forms an integral part of Goa’s identity.”

Earlier in his message, Cardinal Ferrão stated: “I commend The Goan for undertaking this meaningful project. By documenting the historical, architectural, and cultural significance of our Churches, this publication will contribute to a deeper appreciation of the heritage entrusted to us. It will undoubtedly serve as a valuable reference for historians, students, researchers and all who cherish the legacy of the Church in Goa.”

“May this volume encourage us to rediscover the spiritual richness embodied in our Churches and inspire us to preserve and cherish it with steadfast devotion,” he added.

Describing the book ‘Churches of Goa’ as a journey through heritage and faith, The Goan Editor Joel Afonso stated that churches in Goa stand as some of the most prominent landmarks of the cultural and spiritual legacy of the State.

“These places of worship of the Catholic faith have seen an intersection of faith and heritage through generations, and their distinct characteristics, to a large extent, shaped the very identity of the Goan society,” said Afonso.

“Many of these churches can be dated back to the 16th and 17th centuries, a period when missionary activity and local communities joined hands in establishing places of worship

not only in major centres but also in remote villages.”

“Through the ages, some of these structures have been rebuilt and renovated, yet they still carry the enduring imprint of faith and remain a testament to the evolving path of the Christian life.”

Afonso said The Goan has paid a tribute and captured that extraordinary heritage with the special edition book ‘Churches of Goa’.

“This volume offers short historical accounts of 55 churches throughout Goa, along with vibrant images, each one telling a different tale of the origin, devotion and the path of faith. We hope that this book will inspire readers to explore the Churches of Goa, value them, and contribute to their preservation for future generations,” he added.
