The National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has been a significant source of funding for rural infrastructure in Goa, with close to Rs 3,700 crore being sanctioned for 242 projects over the last three decades, boosting rural development across the State.
NABARD, in its focus paper released earlier this week, said that the State has created a wide spectrum of rural infrastructure by availing Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) assistance.
“Starting with Rs 6.84 crore in 1995-96, cumulative RIDF sanction to the State has reached Rs 3,698.51 crore, with cumulative disbursement of Rs 2,468.19 crore for the implementation of 242 projects by March 31, 2024,” NABARD said.
The projects include 113 rural road projects, 35 under minor irrigation, 31 rural bridges, seven under major irrigation and CADA works, one for agricultural feeder lines, 30 rural drinking water supply projects (RDWS), two for flood protection works, nine for public health, eight for rural sanitation, three solid waste treatment plants, and one each for school infrastructure, Anganwadi centres, and fishing jetties.
Of these, 26 projects were under execution as of March 2024. A project on a fish breeding-cum-training centre at Ela Farm was sanctioned under FAIDF, and an amount of Rs 0.42 crore was released during 2023-24.
“Developing rural infrastructure in Goa is essential for fostering sustainable growth, improving the quality of life, and enhancing economic opportunities for rural communities,” NABARD said.
It added that by focusing on improving connectivity, sustainable water management, renewable energy, market access, and healthcare, Goa can ensure that its rural areas are better equipped to thrive. These efforts will contribute to inclusive development and long-term prosperity for Goa’s rural regions.
